Only Twenty Percent | A Poem by Guy Farmer

Unconventional Being - Poems by Poet Guy Farmer

It is said that only twenty percent
Of people are able to change an
Undesirable behavior, even when
They experience severely negative or
Life-threatening consequences, and
Eighty percent will continue doing
The same thing until it consumes them,
Unable to change, emphatically
Assuring themselves that things are
Going much better than they are.

Desperate Attempts | A Poem by Guy Farmer

Unconventional Being - Poems by Poet Guy Farmer

Acutely uncomfortable with
The raw pain he hears gushing
From the other end of the line,
He goes to his standard
Responsibility-shirking retort,
Diverting attention while
Further wounding his victim.
He wins the battle without
Realizing he’s lost everything else.
He breathes a sigh of relief,
At least he didn’t have
To admit to anything.
A scenario briefly flashes
In his mind, unhinged parents
Directing their rage at him,
His desperate attempts
To escape at any cost.

Imagination | A Poem by Guy Farmer

Unconventional Being - Poems by Poet Guy Farmer

Right or wrong,
Good or bad,
Us or them,
Have or have not.

A world of
Stark dualities
Inevitably creating
Winners and losers.

Some notice that
Imagination is
Missing from this
Severe equation:

The ability to
Envision a world
Where everyone
Is able to win.

School Choice | A Poem by Guy Farmer

Unconventional Being - Poems by Poet Guy Farmer

If you had to
Come up with a
Highly effective, and
Fiendishly surreptitious,
Way to destroy
Democracy and make sure
All the money goes
To you and your
Affluent friends, you could,
I suppose, do it by force,
Which leaves a lot of
Bodies and resentment behind,
Or you could gradually
Starve public education,
Perhaps even siphon off
Its funding to other
So-called schools,
To make sure that
The general populace
Gradually, without noticing,
Loses its ability to
Think critically,
Discern what’s really
Happening around them, and
Separate fact from fiction.
The more you weaken
People’s ability to reason,
The sooner you can
Buy another yacht,
Plus you can
Sit back and have
A nice laugh as
People who have far
Less means than you
Passionately defend
What you’ve cleverly
Termed School Choice,
Freedom always sells.

Sharing | A Poem by Guy Farmer

Unconventional Being - Poems by Poet Guy Farmer

Those who bear the burden
Of unusual courage,
Who stand in front
Of an advancing tank,
Or speak against the
Wrongs wrought by a
Corrupt despot,
Who don’t follow the
Standard rules set by
Authoritarians who have
No other aim but to
Keep them compliant,
Subservient,
Those are the people who
Recognize the immense
Pressure the machine exerts
On them when they go
Against the grain,
Advancing an unfamiliar
Alternative that scares
Tyrants to the core:
Empathy, sharing, peace.
